How Can You Use Acupuncture to Enhance Assisted Reproductive Technology Treatment

Top Chicago Licensed Acupuncturist for Fertility and Women’s Issues, Dr. Amy Wolf, FABORM

According to the CDC, the use of Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) has more than doubled in the past decade. The CDC’s 2019 Fertility Clinic Success Rates Report shows that there were 330,773 Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) cycles (not including a new treatment procedure being evaluated at the time) performed at 448 reporting clinics in the United States during 2019, resulting in 77,998 live births (deliveries of one or more living infants) and 83,946 live born infants. Of the 330,773 ART cycles performed in 2019, 121,086 were egg or embryo banking cycles in which all resulting eggs or embryos were frozen for future use.

“As more and more women turn to ART, there is a growing need for advocates and supportive partners to help them through this demanding process,” says Dr. Amy Wolf, licensed acupuncturist and founder of Herb + Ohm in Chicago. “As a licensed acupuncturist who specializes in the field of women’s health—and someone who has personally undergone assisted reproductive technology to have my child—I understand this well.”

Dr. Wolf enjoys working closely with patients who are undergoing IVF or other ART treatments, providing guidance and insights while taking a holistic approach to enhancing their experience. When asked about the benefits of acupuncture for fertility, Dr. Wolf reports:

  • decreased anxiety and stress levels

  • decreased side effects of medication

  • increased blood flow

  • more balanced hormones

“When I work with patients who are planning to or are in the process of having fertility treatment, we discuss lifestyle choices, exercise, diet, and more,” she says. “I help them understand that their role in the process is to be their own advocate, ask questions, take medications on time and on schedule, and more. Having been through it myself, I know how all-encompassing it can be, and I am there to help guide them, while providing the acupuncture treatment they need to keep everything in balance.”

Illinois state licensed acupuncturist and nationally board-certified Traditional Chinese medicine herbalist, Dr. Amy Wolf’s credentials include:
