CHINESE MEDICINE FOR
FERTILITY ENHANCEMENT

TREATMENT METHODS

Acupuncture

Acupuncture is one of the oldest and most widely-known methods of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). We use this healing technique to stimulate the body's immune system and strengthen its ability to heal itself. Acupuncture typically involves the insertion of fine, sterile needles at precise locations (or "points") which correspond to specific ailments or imbalances in the body.

Moxibustion

Moxibustion involves burning an herb called Mugwort and applying the resulting heat to specific acupuncture points on the body. Moxibustion is used to gently stimulate acupuncture points or areas of the body in order to quicken the healing process.

Cupping

Cupping is a therapy that involves placing cups on the skin to create suction. The suction is designed to stimulate the flow of blood within the superficial muscle layers, promoting cell repair. It is commonly used to help relieve muscle tension and soreness as well as the common cold.

Tui Na Medicinal Massage

Tui Na translates as "push grasp." It is a Chinese medicinal massage technique that aims to soften the muscles, increase circulation, increase range of motion, and decrease pain. It’s often used to relieve muscle pain, tension and inflammation, and to heal physical injuries.

Gua Sha

Gua Sha is a technique used to release muscle tension, tightness, constriction and pain. . A specialized tool is used to gently rub the skin over a problem area. Gua Sha feels like deep tissue massage.

Herbal Medicine

Chinese Herbal Medicine uses combinations of plants and minerals to help stimulate the body's immune system and strengthen its ability to heal itself. Similar to acupuncture, Herbal Medicine is a powerful healing tool that can be used to address a variety of ailments, from minor imbalances to chronic conditions, with minimal side effects.

Understanding Menstrual Pain and PMS Symptoms Menstrual pain and PMS (Premenstrual Syndrome) symptoms are common issues that affect a significant number of women. These conditions can vary in severity but often have a noticeable impact on a woman's quality of life. Menstrual Pain (Dysmenorrhea) can range from mild discomfort to severe pain in the lower abdomen, sometimes spreading to the lower back and thighs. It often starts just before or at the onset of the period. PMS encompasses a wide range of symptoms that can manifest physically, emotionally, and behaviorally. Common symptoms include bloating, fatigue, mood swings, irritability, headaches, and changes in appetite or sleep patterns. These typically occur in the one to two weeks leading up to menstruation. The intensity of menstrual pain and PMS symptoms can significantly interfere with daily activities, including work, school, social engagements, and personal relationships. For some women, the symptoms can be debilitating, leading to absenteeism from work or school and a decrease in overall productivity. Emotional symptoms such as anxiety and depression can also affect mental health and well-being. Potential Causes of Menstrual Pain and PMS Symptoms For the women navigating Chicago's fast-paced environment, several factors contribute to menstrual discomfort: Hormonal Imbalances: The cornerstone of menstrual-related discomfort, imbalances between estrogen and progesterone levels can lead to significant physical and emotional symptoms. Stress from Fast-Paced Careers: Chicago's bustling finance, tech, advertising, legal and healthcare industries often come with high stress levels, which can exacerbate hormonal fluctuations and worsen symptoms. Dietary Influences: The urban lifestyle's fast-paced nature may lead to reliance on processed foods and caffeine, which can inflame PMS symptoms and contribute to hormonal disruption. Sedentary Lifestyle: With many professional women spending long hours at desks, the lack of physical activity can intensify menstrual cramps and overall discomfort. Environmental Toxins: Living in a bustling metropolis like Chicago exposes individuals to various pollutants and toxins, which can subtly affect hormonal balance and reproductive health. Recognizing these potential causes is the first step for Chicago's dynamic women to tailor their approach to managing and alleviating menstrual pain and PMS symptoms, setting the foundation for a healthier, more balanced lifestyle. Lifestyle Recommendations for Menstrual Pain and PMS Symptoms For the vibrant, active women seeking relief from menstrual pain and PMS symptoms, adopting specific lifestyle changes can make a substantial difference. Embrace these recommendations to navigate your monthly cycle with greater ease and comfort: Nutrition Focused on Whole Foods: Prioritize a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins. Incorporate foods high in omega-3 fatty acids, such as salmon and flaxseeds, and magnesium-rich options like leafy greens and nuts to help ease menstrual cramps. Regular Exercise: Incorporate activities that you enjoy and fit seamlessly into your busy Chicago lifestyle, such as brisk walking along the Lakefront Trail, yoga in one of the city's serene parks, or cycling on the 606. Also consider taking walk and talk calls vs sitting zoom calls during the spring and summer months. Regular physical activity can help reduce the severity of PMS symptoms by improving circulation and releasing endorphins. Stress Management Techniques: High-stress levels can exacerbate menstrual symptoms. Explore stress-reduction methods that resonate with you, such as mindfulness meditation, deep-breathing exercises, or engaging in creative hobbies. Chicago offers many workshops and classes that can introduce you to these practices. Quality Sleep: Ensure 7-9 hours of restful sleep each night. A consistent sleep schedule supports hormonal balance and can alleviate PMS symptoms. Consider creating a relaxing bedtime routine that may include reading, a warm bath, or gentle stretching. Limit Caffeine and Alcohol Intake: Reducing consumption of caffeine and alcohol, especially in the week before your period, can help minimize bloating, improve sleep quality, and reduce mood swings. Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water throughout the day to help reduce bloating and fatigue associated with menstrual cycles. Carrying a reusable water bottle as you navigate the city can make staying hydrated more convenient. Adapting these lifestyle modifications can empower you to manage menstrual pain and PMS symptoms more effectively, allowing you to continue thriving in your personal and professional life in Chicago. Potential Benefits of Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine for Ailment For those facing the monthly challenges of menstrual pain and PMS, acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine present a promising, natural approach to alleviating these symptoms. Here's how these ancient practices can support your quest for balance and well-being amidst a bustling urban lifestyle: Hormonal Regulation: Acupuncture has been shown to influence the endocrine system, which can help balance hormone levels, reducing the severity of PMS symptoms such as mood swings, bloating, and menstrual irregularities. Pain Relief: By stimulating specific points on the body, acupuncture can trigger the release of endorphins, the body's natural painkillers, providing relief from cramps and discomfort. Stress Reduction: Acupuncture sessions offer a calming experience, reducing cortisol levels (the stress hormone) and promoting a sense of relaxation and well-being. This stress relief is particularly beneficial for professionals in high-stress environments. Improved Circulation: Chinese herbal medicine and acupuncture can enhance blood flow, addressing issues of stagnation that are often associated with menstrual pain. Improved circulation helps to nourish the reproductive organs and regulate the menstrual cycle. Holistic Approach: TCM looks at the body as a whole and seeks to address the root causes of symptoms rather than just treating them. This holistic approach can lead to lasting improvements in menstrual health and overall wellness. Customized Treatment: Both acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine are tailored to the individual's specific symptoms and overall health, providing a personalized treatment plan that resonates with the unique lifestyle and needs of Chicagoan women. Integrating acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine into your health regimen can offer a natural, effective way to manage menstrual pain and PMS, allowing you to maintain your dynamic lifestyle without compromise. Acupuncture and Chinese medicine is in part about optimizing flow within the body, blood flow and energy flow. Movement is a foundational part of achieving optimal flow, and sitting for long periods of time runs counter to those goals. So if you find yourself battling persistent neck and back pain from your sedentary desk job, you're not alone. This blog is crafted with you, the dedicated professional looking for balance, in mind. Let's explore the avenues of relief, particularly through the ancient wisdom of acupuncture and Chinese medicine, at Herb + Ōhm. Understanding Desk Job Discomfort: Neck and back pain, the silent companions of the modern workforce, can manifest as stiffness, discomfort, and even radiating pain. Long hours spent hunched over a computer, poor posture, and lack of movement are common culprits behind desk job-related neck and back pain. It's time to address the root cause and find effective solutions to regain control of your health. Discomfort caused by a desk job can lead to: Tension headaches Muscle spasms Tingling or numbness in fingers Fatigue Reduced concentration or difficulty focusing Decreased productivity and work performance Decreased social engagement Lower mood Reduced sleep quality Lifestyle Recommendations for Desk Job Discomfort: Incorporating simple lifestyle changes can make a significant difference. We recommend the following to take steps toward relief: Move and Stretch Regularly : Incorporate short breaks throughout your workday to stretch and move around. Simple exercises like neck rotations, shoulder rolls, and seated stretches can alleviate tension and improve circulation. You may even want to schedule these breaks into your calendar and/or set an alarm or reminder for them. This will ensure you won’t get carried away through the day without taking care of yourself. Try Walk and Talk Meetings: Instead of another Zoom call, propose a walk and talk meeting to your colleague. This simple change not only energizes your body and mind but also helps to move stagnant energy, boosting your overall health. As the weather warms up, it's a perfect strategy to reduce the hours spent sitting at a desk, which often contributes to neck and shoulder pain. Embrace this dynamic approach to meetings and feel the difference in your posture and well-being. Maintain Proper Posture : Be mindful of your posture while working. Ensure that your computer screen is at eye level, your chair provides proper lumbar support, and your feet rest flat on the floor. This helps prevent the development of poor posture habits that contribute to discomfort. Ergonomic Workspace Adjustments : Evaluate and adjust your workspace ergonomics. Invest in a chair that supports the natural curve of your spine, position your keyboard and mouse at a comfortable height, and use a headset or speakerphone for extended phone calls to minimize neck strain. Hydrate and Nourish : Staying hydrated is crucial for maintaining overall health and can contribute to reducing muscle stiffness. Incorporate water-rich fruits and vegetables into your diet, providing your body with the hydration it needs to support joint and muscle function. Mindful Breathing and Relaxation Techniques : Integrate mindful breathing exercises and relaxation techniques into your routine. Taking a few minutes to focus on your breath or practice deep breathing can help manage stress levels and promote a sense of calm amid your busy workday. Eye Care Breaks : Remember to give your eyes a break from the screen. Follow the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds. This reduces eye strain and can prevent headaches associated with prolonged screen time. Potential Benefits of Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine for Desk Job Discomfort: Holistic Pain Relief : Acupuncture, rooted in ancient Chinese medicine, takes a holistic approach to pain relief. By stimulating specific points on the body, it promotes the body's natural healing processes, targeting both the symptoms and underlying causes of discomfort. Regulating Inflammatory Processes : Pain and inflammation go hand in hand. Acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine, a complementary component, offer natural remedies that aid in regulating and decreasing inflammatory processes to relieve pain. Improved Blood Circulation : Acupuncture promotes better blood circulation, addressing issues related to stiffness and soreness. Improved circulation ensures that vital nutrients reach affected areas, aiding in the healing process and decreasing pain. Endorphin Release : Acupuncture triggers the release of endorphins – the body's natural painkillers. This natural boost not only helps in pain management but also contributes to an improved mood and overall sense of well-being. Holistic Relief for Body and Mind: Acupuncture stands out for its holistic approach, targeting both the physical and emotional dimensions of well-being. It recognizes that emotional stress often manifests physically, leading to tension and sore muscles. By addressing these interconnected aspects, acupuncture provides comprehensive relief, allowing the body and mind to relax and heal together. As April ushers in the renewal of spring in Chicago, it brings with it the promise of new beginnings and the opportunity to rebalance our health and wellness priorities. In a city renowned for its incredible restaurant scene, the temptation to indulge in culinary delights is ever-present, adding another layer to the challenge of maintaining optimal digestive health amidst demanding careers and personal obligations. While savoring the flavors of Chicago’s eateries is one of life's pleasures, it can sometimes lead to digestive discomfort, particularly during this vibrant yet bustling time of year. For those navigating the complexities of digestive discomfort amidst a hectic lifestyle, this blog offers a guiding light. We delve into the factors contributing to digestive issues and highlight how acupuncture, steeped in centuries-old traditions yet perfectly aligned with the demands of modern life, provides effective relief and paves the way to improved digestive wellness. Understanding Digestive Issues Digestive issues encompass a broad range of conditions, from bloating and indigestion to more complex disorders like irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Digestive issues, though common, often conceal layers of complexity beneath their surface symptoms. Beyond the discomfort of these symptoms lies a web of interwoven factors influencing the delicate balance of your gut ecosystem. Potential Symptoms of Digestive Issues Common symptoms of digestive issues may include: Abdominal pain or discomfort Bloating and gas Constipation Diarrhea Heartburn Acid reflux Loss of appetite Fatigue Potential Causes of Digestive Issues Digestive issues can stem from a variety of factors, and understanding these potential causes is crucial for addressing and managing gastrointestinal discomfort. Here are some common contributors to digestive issues: Unhealthy Dietary Habits : Highly processed foods rich in additives, preservatives, and artificial ingredients can disrupt the natural balance of the digestive system, and diets high in refined sugars may contribute to inflammation, alter gut bacteria, and lead to digestive problems as well. Imbalance in Gut Microbiota : This imbalance in the composition and diversity of gut bacteria is called dysbiosis and can affect digestion and absorption of nutrients. Certain medications, especially prolonged use of antibiotics, can disturb the balance of gut bacteria as well. Stress and Anxiety : Our emotions and our gut are intimately connected. Stress and anxiety has influence over the gut-brain axis, leading to changes in gut motility, sensitivity, and function. Sedentary Lifestyle : Regular physical activity promotes healthy digestion by stimulating bowel movements and reducing the risk of constipation. Food Intolerances : Inability to digest certain components of food, such as a lactose or gluten intolerance, can lead to gastrointestinal symptoms. Hormonal Changes : Hormonal fluctuations due to the menstrual cycle or menopause can influence bowel habits and exacerbate digestive symptoms in some individuals. Crohn's Disease or Ulcerative Colitis : Chronic conditions causing inflammation in the digestive tract can result in symptoms like abdominal pain, diarrhea, and weight loss. Gastrointestinal Infections : Infections in the gastrointestinal tract, whether bacterial, viral, or parasitic, can cause acute or chronic digestive issues. Structural Abnormalities : Structural issues within the digestive tract, such as hernias, polyps, or tumors, can impede normal functioning and lead to symptoms. It's crucial to understand that lifestyle, genetics, and environmental factors frequently intertwine, affecting an individual's digestive health in unique ways. A consultation with a healthcare professional is essential for pinpointing the specific contributors to your condition and developing a customized management plan that caters to your personal needs. Lifestyle Recommendations for Digestive Wellness To promote digestive health, consider incorporating the following lifestyle adjustments: Mindful and Intuitive Eating : Be present as you eat and chew your food thoroughly to increase available nutrients for absorption. Avoid eating at your desk, while watching tv, or while taking a call, as this can slow down and negatively impact the digestive process. Listen to your body's signals of hunger and fullness. Consistent and Balanced Diet : Consume a diet rich in fiber, fruits, vegetables, and probiotic-rich foods to support a healthy gut. Establish a consistent eating schedule as well to regulate digestion. Skipping meals can disrupt the natural rhythm of your digestive system, potentially leading to discomfort. Stay Hydrated : Drink an adequate amount of water throughout the day to aid digestion and nutrient absorption, and to prevent constipation. Consider incorporating soothing herbal teas like peppermint or ginger into your routine too. These teas have digestive benefits and can provide a comforting, holistic approach to supporting your digestive system. Regular Exercise : Physical activity can help promote regular bowel movements and increase blood circulation in the digestive organs. This heightened blood flow ensures that the digestive system receives an adequate supply of oxygen and nutrients, promoting optimal functioning. Stress Management : Stress has a direct impact on the gut-brain axis. This bidirectional communication between the brain and the gut means that stress can influence the motility, sensitivity, and overall function of your digestive system. By actively managing stress, you empower your body to maintain a state of balance, reducing the likelihood of digestive discomfort. Practice stress-reducing activities such as meditation, yoga, or deep breathing exercises. Potential Benefits of Acupuncture for Digestive Health Alleviating Digestive Discomfort : Acupuncture offers soothing relief for those times when your digestive system seems to be in disarray, acting as a natural harmonizer to restore balance. By targeting specific points associated with digestive organs, acupuncture has the potential to alleviate symptoms such as bloating, indigestion, and discomfort. It's a gentle yet profound intervention that resonates with the rhythm of your body. Enhancing Blood Circulation : Just as with exercise, acupuncture not only influences energy flow but also promotes enhanced blood circulation. As we discussed earlier, improved blood flow to the digestive organs supports the efficient transport of nutrients and aids in the overall health of your gastrointestinal system. Reducing Inflammation : Chronic inflammation in the digestive system is associated with various gastrointestinal conditions. Acupuncture has demonstrated anti-inflammatory effects, and by reducing inflammation, it may contribute to alleviating symptoms of conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) or inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Stress Reduction : In the holistic symphony of digestive well-being, stress reduction plays a key role. Acupuncture is renowned for its ability to calm the nervous system, reducing stress and anxiety levels. By harmonizing the mind-body connection, acupuncture contributes to a serene environment for optimal digestion. Regulating Hormonal Responses : Acupuncture may influence the release of various hormones involved in digestion and gut function. For example, it may help regulate the release of gastrointestinal hormones responsible for controlling appetite, nutrient absorption, and the movement of food through the digestive tract. Regulating Gut Motility : Acupuncture's influence extends to the intricate dance of gut motility. By modulating the contractions and movements of the digestive tract, acupuncture strives to promote regular bowel movements. This rhythmic regulation enhances the efficiency of nutrient absorption and waste elimination. Chicago winters can be brutal. The cold, the gray skies, the shorter days – it's enough to make anyone feel sluggish. But for people with chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), winter can be especially challenging. While there's no cure, there are treatments that can help manage symptoms and improve quality of life. Acupuncture and traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) have shown promise in helping people with CFS. Acupuncture offers a potential avenue for relief by restoring balance, reviving energy, and paving the way toward a better quality of life. What is Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS)? Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, also known as myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME), is a complex and debilitating medical condition characterized by persistent and unexplained fatigue that fails to improve with rest. Individuals with CFS often contend with a myriad of symptoms, including cognitive difficulties, sleep disturbances, muscle and joint pain, and headaches. Despite its prevalence, the exact cause of CFS remains unknown, complicating diagnosis and treatment. Potential Causes of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome While the precise cause of CFS remains unclear, several factors have been associated with its onset: Viral Infections : Certain viral infections, such as Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) and human herpesvirus 6 (HHV-6), have been linked to CFS onset. Immune System Dysfunction : Abnormalities in immune function may contribute to the manifestation of CFS symptoms. Genetic Predisposition : There may be a genetic component predisposing individuals to CFS. Hormonal Imbalances : Dysregulation of hormone levels, including cortisol and thyroid hormones, may play a role in CFS. Central Nervous System Dysfunction : Alterations in the central nervous system, including neurotransmitter imbalances, may contribute to CFS symptoms. Environmental Triggers : Exposure to toxins or pollutants may trigger or exacerbate CFS symptoms. Physical or Emotional Trauma : Traumatic events, such as severe infections or stressful life events, may precede CFS onset. Nutritional Deficiencies : Both Vitamin D and iron deficiencies can manifest as chronic fatigue. A lack of iron, specifically, can result in decreased oxygen transport, causing fatigue. Sleep Disorders : Sleep apnea, insomnia, and restless leg syndrome may all be precursors to an experience of chronic fatigue. Lifestyle Factors : A sedentary lifestyle and lack of physical activity may lead to decreased energy levels. An object at rest stays at rest, and without the momentum of regular movement, it may be harder to get up and get going. Medication Side Effects : Certain medications may include side effects of fatigue. Potential Symptoms of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Symptoms of CFS can vary widely among individuals and may include: Severe Fatigue Post-Exertional Malaise (PEM) Unrefreshing Sleep Cognitive Difficulties (Brain Fog) Muscle and Joint Pain Sore Throat Headaches Tender Lymph Nodes Dizziness or Lightheadedness Intolerance to Physical or Mental Exertion Digestive Problems Sensitivity to Light, Noise, or Odors Mood Disorders Allergies Potential Benefits of Acupuncture for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Acupuncture offers a holistic approach to addressing CFS symptoms by: Reducing Stress : Acupuncture may alleviate stress and promote relaxation, enhancing emotional well-being. Modulating the Immune System : Acupuncture may regulate immune function, addressing immune dysregulation in CFS. Relieving Pain : By stimulating the release of natural pain-relieving substances, acupuncture can alleviate muscle and joint pain associated with CFS. Improving Sleep : Acupuncture may regulate sleep patterns and enhance sleep quality, reducing fatigue. Restoring Hormonal Balance : Acupuncture may regulate hormone levels disrupted in CFS, improving symptoms and energy levels. Enhancing Mental Clarity : Acupuncture may improve cognitive function and alleviate cognitive impairments commonly experienced by individuals with CFS. Increasing Circulation : Acupuncture stimulates blood flow to various parts of the body. Improved circulation may enhance oxygen and nutrient delivery, promoting better overall energy levels. Improving Energy Flow : Acupuncture aims to balance the body's energy, or Qi, by stimulating specific points along energy pathways (meridians). This balance may contribute to improved energy flow and vitality. Herb + Ōhm’s Unique Blend of Healing - Where East Meets West: We do things differently here at Herb + Ōhm.
